UPND vice-president Richard Kapita has urged the people of Southern Province to vote for party leader Hakainde Hichilema for republican president because he is Tonga.
Mr Kapita said this during a UPND-sponsored programme on Sky FM radio in Monze recently.
“You Tongas must wake up and say we are proud of being Tonga, don’t be shy or ashamed when you are told that you are Tonga, and you start hiding under the table. Go out there and give Hakainde a massive vote next time and make sure that other candidates get zero votes,” he said.
Mr Kapita said giving Mr Hichilema 100 per cent vote is the only way the Tonga people will produce a president.
He said all the complaints the people of Southern Province have will be addressed once they vote for Mr Hichilema.
“Secondly, the point I want to relate to is this issue of people complaining from Southern Province, asking what should be done. You know what you should do. You people from Southern Province surprise me, you know what to do,” he said.
Mr Kapita said the people of Southern Province should not be ashamed to vote for Mr Hichilema, adding that instead they should be proud of voting for him because he is a capable leader.
“You should vote for Hakainde today, tomorrow, the other day and next year,” he said.
Mr Kapita also said it is not true that UPND only has members of Parliament (MPs) in Southern Province.
He said his party has MPs in Central, North-Western and Western provinces apart from Southern Province.
And Mr Hichilema said the UPND will not listen to people abusing ethnicity to remain in power.
Mr Hichilema said Zambia needs leadership that will deliver economic and social development and create employment in the country.
