In a dramatic turn of events Malawis newly sworn in President Joice Hilder Band Sunday afternoon fired the country’s Police Inspector General Peter Mukhatho and replaced him with police Commissioner Lonzi Zonzi.
This has sparked fears among other government officials appointed by the late President Bingu WA Mutharika who had been accused nepotism on several occasions by the former Vice President Banda. Banda had been accusing Mutharika during her Peoples Party rallies of nepotism by promoting people of his Lomwe tribe particularly Mulanje and Nthyolo districts in top government positions, citing the fired Mukhitho as an example.
In a statement signed by the Office of President and Cabinet- OPC Banda who is also the Police Commander- in -Chief says Zonzi is the police Chief with effect from Sunday. The firing of Mukhatho, who was described by the late Mutharika as the best Police Inspector General Malawi has ever had, has pleased most people in major cities of
Blantyre, Lilongwe and MZuzu who claim that the officer was promoting Dictatorial tendencies together with the former President by making the country a police state. “True he must go we dont want him, he killed our 20 children during the July 20 pro democracy demonstrations” said 56year old Brown Soko. Meanwhile, this Sodom
and Gomorrah of sacking out incompetent top government officials is expected to
Continue as the President is striving to bring sanity in government in attempt
to regain the country’s lost donor confidence. .
